SEED Science Dinners

Washington DC, October, 2012 - In an ongoing effort to introduce students from The SEED School of DC to all aspects of STEM, the International Neuroscience Network Foundation is sponsoring a series of dinners with researchers from the entire spectrum of science, technology, engineering and mathematics subjects. On October 11, 2012 , Dr. Matthew Garcia, an AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow from the Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy (EERE) visited SEED. He discussed his current work on Education and Workforce Training initiatives at DOE. As a fellow he works to promote energy literacy and to increase opportunities for training and workforce development in energy careers. Dr. Garcia coordinates the Energy 101 initiative - an effort to support the creation of an interdisciplinary, systems based, undergraduate energy course. Dr. Garcia also helps supports the National Training and Education Resource (NTER) platform - a free open source solution to creating and distributing workforce development, training, and education content online.

Throughout his career, Dr. Garcia has worked to open up biomedical research to a broader community. He obtained his B.S. in Biology with Honors from the University of Texas Pan American in Edinburg, Texas, and his Ph.D. in Anatomy and Neurobiology from the University Of Kentucky College Of Medicine. While at the University of Kentucky, he worked to increase involvement of underrepresented populations in biomedical research. He then went to St. Jude's, and served on the postdoctoral council as the vice chair for national outreach, and as vice chair for volunteer services. While working for St. Jude's in Memphis, he founded the "Art of Science Memphis" collaboration which uses the medium of art to communicate in a unique manner the science behind biomedical research.
